Our Oil Has Lots of CBG! Wait, what is CBG?

You might have heard of a “new” cannabinoid called CBG. While CBG is not really “new” (our oil has had high concentrations of CBG for a long time now), it’s trending in popularity due to a wealth of new research into its own effects on the body, as well as its role in enhancing the effectiveness of CBD. So, what’s all the fuss about?

Well, Dr. Bonnie Goldstein, who has treated thousands of patients with cannabinoids, and is considered a leading expert in the clinical use of cannabinoids, says this:

“It appears that CBG does a lot of things that THC does and a lot of things that CBD does — but maybe even a little bit better. It’s kind of a bridge between THC and CBD. CBG is not intoxicating or impairing. It seems to be effective at lower doses compared to CBD. And it does appear to address some of the main issues that people turn to cannabis for — inflammation, pain, anxiety, sleep problems, depression, and cancer. So, like it checks all the boxes, especially for people who don’t want to get high and who don’t have the ability to pay for very high doses of CBD.”

The Entourage Effect

You may have noticed that many of the CBDs on the market are CBD isolates (also called “purified” CBD). CBD isolates are also used in many of the research studies on CBD and are typically what is used in the few pharmaceutical products that incorporate CBD.

While CBD itself can be powerful, studies show that when the CBD is not stripped out and isolated from the other cannabinoids (like CBG) and the other plant compounds found in hemp flower, the CBD is 4 times stronger. CBG enhances the “entourage effect,” making the CBD more potent.

Dr. Goldstein illustrates this beautifully:

“There’s a 2019 animal study that showed the combination of CBD and CBG decreased neuroinflammation. They were looking specifically at neurodegenerative disorders with dementia, what we call Lou Gehrig’s Disease or ALS. And it showed in this preclinical study that CBD and CBG worked together and gave better results for protecting against neuroinflammation. This ties into the concept of the entourage effect, whereby combinations of cannabinoids and terpenes appear to enhance the benefits, the positive results.”

That’s one of the things that makes Venerable Aubert Herbals’ oil so potent, even at so-called “lower strengths,” like 250 mg or 500 mg. Our traditional extraction process retains tons of CBG, as well as a host of other cannabinoids, terpenes, and other flower components many CBD oils on the market leave out or simply cannot include due to the way they are manufactured.

CBG-Specific Effects

In addition to increasing the “entourage effect” of CBD, studies suggest CBG is powerful in its own right. Studies suggest CBG blocks anandamide metabolism, meaning anandamide stays longer in the body and breaks down less quickly. Anandamide is known as the “bliss molecule” for its ability to increase dopamine and to induce a feeling of well-being.

And like CBD, studies suggest CBG may act on the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the Endocannabinoid System to regulate and maintain homeostasis in a wide range of body systems, such as sleeping and waking, temperature, the nervous system, the digestive system, the circulatory system, hunger, pain, immunity, and more (See more about the Endocannabinoid System here)

Research suggested CBG may have diverse and powerful effects such as:

  1. Acting as an antibiotic that has killed even MRSA: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18681481/
  2. Acting to reduce symptoms of Irritable Bowel Disorder:

  3. Provide neuroprotective properties that even relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s and Huntington’s:

  4. Provide potent anti-inflammatory action, helping to decrease pain, swelling, and stiffness:

  5. Acting against auto immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis:

  6. Provide antioxidant effects equivalent to vitamin E: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9666035/

Other positive effects found in studies on CBG: protection against brain injury, reduction in intraocular eye pressure, anti-nausea, anti-anxiety, anti-acne, helps psoriasis, reduces bladder contractibility. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9666035/

Finally, many anecdotes are pouring out that CBG may be particularly helpful for symptoms of ADHD. This man with ADHD says he was no longer exhausted or tired, but “I found I was motivated, always excited and got lots of work done.” https://cannabishealthnews.co.uk/2022/01/27/how-cbg-has-been-a-game-changer-for-my-adhd-mental-health21/amp/

Parents and doctors are sharing that they are finding similar benefits for their children. To return to Dr. Goldstein:

“CBG is the only cannabinoid that has been found to work at the alpha-adrenergic receptor, which mediates pain perception and inflammation. There are pharmaceuticals for ADHD or behavioral issues, for example, which target this receptor. CBG is always a compound I consider when treating children who have either behavior or other types of difficulties. I have used it in some of my patients with autism. Some families report their child is calmer, has better focus, even speech is improving in some of the children with autism who are non-verbal.”

So, now you know what all the fuss is about. Of course, if you’ve been using Venerable Aubert Herbals oil, you’re already covered.
